What it is

Gemini is Google’s AI chatbot and assistant — the headline product is the consumer chat at gemini.google.com, but “Gemini” is also the name of the underlying model family (Gemini 3 Pro, Gemini 3 Flash, Gemini 3 Nano) and a brand applied across Google’s products (Gemini in Gmail, Gemini in Docs, Gemini in Sheets, Gemini in Meet, Gemini in Android, Gemini in Chrome).

It’s the successor to Google’s earlier “Bard” chatbot (March 2023), rebranded December 2023 when Google merged Bard with the new Gemini model family. Development is jointly led by Google AI in California and Google DeepMind in London (DeepMind itself is a UK-founded AI lab acquired by Google in 2014).

Analogy: if ChatGPT is “the AI that became famous first” and Claude is “the thoughtful one,” Gemini is “the AI that’s already in everything Google you use” — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, YouTube, Chrome, Android, the Pixel phone. Its competitive edge is depth of integration with the tools you already use.

What you’d use it for

  • General chat — questions, brainstorming, explanations
  • Working inside Google Workspace — “summarize this email thread in Gmail,” “make a table in Sheets from these notes in Docs,” “schedule a Meet with the team about this thread”
  • Long-document analysis — 1M+ token context window means you can paste hundreds of pages and get useful answers
  • Image generation — built-in Imagen access; one of the best at photorealism
  • Image understanding — upload screenshots, photos, diagrams
  • Video understanding — upload a video (up to 60 minutes free tier) and ask questions
  • Audio understanding — upload audio recordings
  • Gemini Live — real-time spoken voice conversation with camera-sharing
  • Deep Research — long-running research mode that produces a structured report
  • Gems — custom mini-assistants (Google’s answer to OpenAI’s GPTs)
  • NotebookLM — sister product, the encyclopedia’s strongly-recommended “audio-overviews from your own PDFs” tool (see its own entry)
  • Code Assist — coding helper available in VS Code, JetBrains, terminals
  • Project Astra — preview of an always-on visual assistant via your phone camera (rolling out)
  • AI Mode in Google Search — Gemini-powered conversational mode in google.com

How to sign up + first 5 minutes from Australia

  1. Open gemini.google.com in any browser. You’ll be auto-signed-in if you have a Google account.
  2. If you have no Google account: click Create account at accounts.google.com first (one minute, free).
  3. The free tier is active immediately — no separate sign-up form. You can chat with Gemini 3 Pro right away.
  4. Try one of these:
    • “Summarize the news in Australia this week”
    • Upload a photo: “What kind of plant is this?”
    • “Create an image of Bondi Beach at sunset, in the style of an oil painting” (uses Imagen)
    • Click the microphone button and have a voice conversation (Gemini Live)
    • “Help me plan a one-day trip from Sydney to the Blue Mountains” — try it with Deep Research mode for a more thorough plan
  5. If you’re a university student in Australia, claim free Google AI Pro at gemini.google.com/students. Verify your .edu.au email — instant 12-month free Pro subscription (renewable while you’re a student).
  6. Optional — upgrade to Pro or Ultra. Bottom-left menu → Upgrade. Billed through your existing Google Payments profile (AUD, GST handled). Cancel any time.
  7. For Gmail / Docs / Sheets integration: sign in to gmail.com — the Gemini icon appears in the right-side panel of Gmail and Docs (for Workspace + AI Pro/Ultra subscribers).

If you’re a heavy Google Workspace user (Gmail, Docs, Sheets every day), Gemini is the natural choice. If you’re a university student in Australia, Gemini Pro is free — no reason not to use it. For deep coding or thoughtful long-form writing, Claude is still the encyclopedia’s top pick.

Privacy / data handling deep dive

Default for Free + Pro + Ultra: Gemini Apps Activity is ON, which means:

  • Your conversations are saved to your Google account
  • Conversations are sampled and used to train future Gemini models
  • Human reviewers may read sampled conversations (a small percentage) to improve quality

To opt out:

  1. Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini
  2. Click Gemini Apps Activity
  3. Toggle OFF
  4. (Optional) Click “Delete activity” and choose a time range to wipe past activity

When Gemini Apps Activity is OFF:

  • Future conversations are NOT saved
  • Future conversations are NOT used for training
  • You lose chat history (this is a tradeoff — no history, but no training)

Google Workspace (Business / Enterprise): Gemini does NOT train on your data. Workspace data is tenant-isolated; admin retention controls apply. Contractually guaranteed.

Google AI Studio (free tier of the developer API): DOES train on your inputs by default. This is the unusual case — AI Studio is explicitly a “we’re learning what people want to do” playground. Don’t paste sensitive data into the free AI Studio.

Google AI Studio (paid tier) and Vertex AI: do NOT train. Tied to Google Cloud’s enterprise data-governance.

Data retention: by default, Gemini Apps Activity is kept for 18 months, then auto-deleted (you can shorten or lengthen this in myactivity.google.com).

Where data lives: US data centres by default for consumer. For Vertex AI / Workspace Enterprise, AUS data residency is available (australia-southeast1 Sydney; australia-southeast2 Melbourne).

Australian Privacy Act: Google is subject to it. They publish a Privacy Policy meeting the Australian Privacy Principles. Google publishes annual transparency reports.

Human review: Google explicitly discloses that Gemini conversations may be reviewed by humans for quality improvement (a small percentage, after anonymisation). This is more transparent than some competitors. If you want to avoid this entirely, turn off Gemini Apps Activity.

Gotchas

  • Gemini and Google Assistant are different things. “Hey Google” on a Pixel/Nest device historically went to Google Assistant. Google is gradually replacing Assistant with Gemini, but on older devices you may have both, and they behave differently. Newer Pixels default to Gemini.
  • “Gemini in Gmail” is gated by both AI Pro AND Workspace tier — some legacy individual Workspace plans don’t include it.
  • Gemini in Google Docs requires AI Pro or Ultra for personal accounts; Workspace Business/Enterprise tiers may or may not include it depending on the SKU.
  • The free tier “rolls down” to a smaller model when you hit daily limits — same caveat as ChatGPT. Watch the model indicator.
  • The chat experience at gemini.google.com is NOT the same as Gemini in the Google app on iPhone/Android — features arrive at different times, and the apps have a slightly older UI.
  • “Saved info” in Gemini is a separate setting from Gemini Apps Activity. You can have Saved Info on (Gemini remembers you live in Sydney) but Activity off (no chat history).
  • Imagen images have a SynthID watermark embedded. Helpful for transparency, but means downstream tools can identify the image as AI-generated. Not a problem for personal use; relevant for commercial use cases that want plausible-photoreal results.
  • Veo videos are watermarked too (visible “Veo” tag + invisible SynthID).
  • Gemini sometimes refuses requests with vague safety reasoning — Google’s safety filtering can be more conservative than competitors on certain topics. Rephrase or switch tools.
  • NotebookLM is a separate product from Gemini, even though it uses Gemini under the hood. Different URL (notebooklm.google.com), different UI, different limits. Use it for source-specific research rather than general chat.
  • “Google AI Pro” replaced “Google One AI Premium” in early 2026. If you signed up under the old name, you’re now on AI Pro automatically — same features, same price.
  • Family Link parental controls don’t fully apply to Gemini for kids’ accounts until they hit age 18 (varies by jurisdiction). For under-18s, Google offers a separate “Gemini for kids” experience with extra safeguards in some markets — check google.com/families for AUS-specific options.
  • The Gemini API and the Vertex AI API are different APIs with overlapping but different model availability. Choose Gemini API for quick start; Vertex AI for enterprise with AUS data residency.
