What it is

Alexa+ is Amazon’s reinvention of Alexa for the generative-AI era. The original Alexa (launched 2014 with the first Amazon Echo) was a voice assistant that handled scripted “skills” — set timers, play music, control lights. By the late 2010s / early 2020s, it had been overtaken in capability by ChatGPT / Gemini / Claude voice modes.

Alexa+ is Amazon’s response: rebuilt with LLM technology (mix of Amazon Nova + Anthropic Claude under the hood), Alexa+ can:

  • Have conversational multi-turn discussions (not just one-shot commands)
  • Plan multi-step tasks — “find a plumber, check reviews, book the highest-rated one available next week”
  • Use connected apps — book Uber, order food, schedule meetings, browse with you
  • Remember context across conversations (Memory)
  • Adapt to user preferences over time
  • Generate written content — emails, lists, summaries
  • Visual responses on Echo Show / Fire TV — show information graphically
  • Multi-room awareness — knows which room you’re in based on which Echo answered

Available on:

  • Echo devices (Dot, Show, Studio, etc.)
  • Fire TV
  • Amazon Kids+ devices
  • Soon: third-party Alexa-enabled devices

What you’d use it for

  • Home smart-assistant — but now with real conversation, not just commands
  • Multi-step tasks — booking, planning, organising
  • Shopping — though obviously Amazon-biased
  • Family hub — Echo Show in the kitchen as info / commands centre
  • Hands-free productivity — voice email, voice lists, voice calendar
  • Smart-home control with conversational nuance
  • Replacing dumber voice assistants — Siri / Google Assistant if you’re upgrading

How to get from Australia

  1. Have an Amazon account (linked to amazon.com.au)
  2. Verify Alexa+ availability in your AUS region — rollout is staged; some features may arrive later
  3. Already an Echo / Fire TV owner: Alexa+ rolls out via software updates
  4. Free with Amazon Prime AU (AUD $9.99/month) — most cost-effective
  5. Or US$20/month standalone (non-Prime members)

What it costs

Free with Amazon Prime

  • AUD 79/year for Prime (also includes Prime Video, free shipping, etc.)
  • Alexa+ bundled as Prime benefit

Standalone — US$20/month

  • For non-Prime members
  • (Prime is usually better value)

For Echo-heavy households, Alexa+ is the natural upgrade path; the smart-home depth Amazon built over a decade is hard to replicate.

Privacy / data handling

  • Voice recordings — Echo devices can be set to delete after processing OR keep for review; user-configurable
  • Amazon retains processed data for service improvement unless opted out
  • AI processing — mix of Amazon Nova + Anthropic Claude (via Bedrock) — both have strong privacy postures
  • Always-listening concern is real — Echo devices listen continuously for wake word; recordings start only on wake word but the always-listening hardware is constant
  • For privacy-sensitive contexts (bedroom, work-from-home with confidential calls), consider unplugging or muting

Recent changes

  • 2026: Broader regional rollout including AUS
  • February 2025: Alexa+ announced
  • Original Alexa launched November 2014

Gotchas

  • Echo hardware needs to be relatively recent — older Echo devices may not get full Alexa+ features
  • “Always-listening” concern — same as Apple HomePod, Google Nest, etc. The wake word is processed on-device, but the device is always-on
  • Heavy Amazon shopping bias — Alexa+ will helpfully suggest Amazon products; honesty about this
  • AUS feature parity lags US — verify which features are available in your region
  • Voice biometrics can identify which family member is asking — useful for personalisation, can be unsettling
  • Multi-step tasks are improving but still limited compared to dedicated agent products (Operator / Devin)
