What it is
Claude.ai is Anthropic’s consumer chat product. You sign in with email or Google, and talk to Claude through a clean web interface (claude.ai), a desktop app (Mac, Windows), or mobile apps (iOS, Android). It’s the consumer-facing counterpart to:
- The Claude API at
console.anthropic.com(for developers building apps that talk to Claude) - Claude Code (the terminal CLI for working with Claude on coding projects)
The product launched 11 July 2023, initially restricted to the US and UK. Australia got access on 9 May 2024.
Analogy: if ChatGPT is “the AI that became famous first” and Gemini is “the AI inside everything Google,” Claude is “the careful, thoughtful one.” It’s known for: better long-form writing voice, more honest acknowledgement of uncertainty, careful refusals that explain themselves, and the encyclopedia’s strong preference for serious writing and coding tasks.
What you’d use it for
- General chat — questions, brainstorming, explanations
- Long-form writing — essays, articles, fiction, reports (many writers’ first choice for voice and reasoning)
- Coding — generating, debugging, explaining (the chat surface; for deeper coding sessions, use Claude Code)
- Document analysis — upload PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, get summaries and Q&A
- Image understanding — upload photos, screenshots, diagrams; Claude reads them with high accuracy
- Artifacts — interactive widgets (React apps, diagrams, documents, games) generated inside the chat
- Projects — long-context workspaces where you persist files, instructions, and history for a specific topic
- Skills — reusable instruction packs that customise Claude for specific kinds of work
- Memory — Claude remembers facts across conversations
- Voice mode — spoken back-and-forth (rolling out region-by-region)
- Research mode — multi-step research that produces structured findings (Pro/Max)
- Connectors / tools — Claude can read your Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, Notion, Linear, etc. (Pro/Max with explicit per-tool authorisation)
How to sign up + first 5 minutes from Australia
- Open
claude.aiin any browser. Or download “Claude” from the App Store (iOS), Google Play (Android), or claude.ai/download (Mac/Windows). - Click Sign up. Use email, or Continue with Google to use your Google account.
- Verify your email if you signed up that way.
- Enter your phone number — your Australian mobile (+61) works. SMS verification arrives in seconds.
- You’re now on the free tier. You can immediately use Claude Sonnet 4.6 (the workhorse model) with a generous daily limit, plus Artifacts, Projects, file uploads, image understanding.
- Try one of these:
- “Help me draft an email politely declining a meeting invitation”
- “Read this PDF and summarize the key points” (upload a PDF)
- “Make me an interactive widget that calculates compound interest” (Artifact)
- “What’s a thoughtful, honest answer to ‘why does the universe exist’”
- Click “Create new project” and give Claude a persistent topic-specific context to work in
- Optional — upgrade to Pro. Bottom-left → Upgrade Plan → Pro. AUD card / Apple Pay / Google Pay all work. US$20/mo. Cancel any time via the same menu.

| Price (top consumer tier) | US$20-200 | US$20-200 | US$19.99-249.99 |
If you’re picking ONE for thoughtful writing, careful reasoning, or serious coding work — Claude is the encyclopedia’s top pick. If you need built-in image/video generation, ChatGPT or Gemini have that advantage. If you live in Google Workspace, Gemini is more naturally integrated.

Privacy / data handling deep dive
Important recent change: in September 2025, Anthropic announced that as of late 2025 / early 2026, consumer Claude.ai conversations (Free, Pro, Max) are used for training by default unless you opt out. Previously the default was “no training” — this was a real policy shift and worth knowing about.
To opt out (recommended unless you specifically want to contribute to training):
- Open claude.ai → click your profile (bottom-left)
- Settings → Privacy → Help improve Claude → toggle OFF
After opting out:
- Future conversations are NOT used to train Anthropic’s models
- Past conversations may already have been used and can’t be retroactively removed from existing training datasets
Team / Enterprise: Anthropic does NOT train on your data. Contractually committed. Tenant-isolated.
API: Anthropic does NOT train on API inputs by default. Contractually committed under the Commercial Terms of Service. Inputs are stored for 30 days for abuse-monitoring, then deleted (unless you’re flagged for abuse review or you’ve opted into custom Trust & Safety configurations).
Memory: Claude remembers facts about you across conversations. Found in Settings → Personalization → Memory. You can review, delete individual memories, or turn it off.
Projects: files you upload to a Project are stored as part of that workspace until you delete the Project or remove the file. Treated the same as chat history for retention; same opt-out applies for training.
Data retention: chat history is retained indefinitely by default. To delete: Settings → Privacy → Delete all chats. To export everything: Settings → Privacy → Export data.
Where data lives: US data centres by default for consumer. AUS data residency available via AWS Bedrock (Sydney ap-southeast-2) for enterprise customers — useful if your business has data-residency requirements.
Australian Privacy Act: Anthropic is subject to it when handling Australian personal information. Privacy Policy meets the Australian Privacy Principles. If using Claude for business with customer data flowing through, document it in your privacy policy under APP 8.
Transparency: Anthropic publishes a Responsible Scaling Policy and (irregularly) trust & safety transparency reports. They’re more focused on AI-safety transparency than on government-data-request transparency than some competitors — both kinds of transparency matter but worth knowing the focus.

Gotchas
- Claude.ai (the chat) and the Claude API (developer) are SEPARATE accounts and bills. Pro doesn’t include API credits; the API doesn’t include claude.ai chat. Easy to confuse — many people sign up for both.
- Free tier limits aren’t published as exact numbers — Anthropic uses “you’ve reached your limit for now, try again in [time]” messaging. You can’t pre-compute your daily quota. Pro removes most of the friction.
- Opus has much tighter limits than Sonnet on Pro — heavy Opus users should consider Max.
- Extended Thinking mode burns through limits faster because the model produces more internal reasoning tokens. Use selectively.
- Projects context fills up as you keep adding files. Old conversations within a Project use Project files as context — if the Project is large, every message is expensive.
- Connectors require explicit per-tool authorisation every time you connect or re-grant access. Initial setup takes a few minutes; once connected, “Read my Gmail and summarise threads about X” just works.
- Mobile app and web app are gently different — the desktop/web has Artifacts and Projects with full features; the mobile app is catching up but a few features still appear web-first.
- Voice mode availability is rolling out region by region — Australian availability may differ from the marketing material. Check the app for current availability.
- Claude will refuse some requests that ChatGPT or Gemini might engage with — especially ones it interprets as potentially harmful. The refusals are usually well-explained; rephrase if you think it’s a misjudgement, or try another tool.
- Memory can leak surprising things (“user wants honest responses about astrology” might persist as a Memory). Check Memory occasionally and prune.
- “Sign in with Google” creates a separate account from “sign in with email.” If you accidentally make both, your chat history splits.
- The free tier model selector may show “Claude Sonnet” without a version number — that’s whichever Sonnet is current. Pro lets you pin to a specific version.
- Constitutional AI ≠ hard guardrails — Claude’s training aims for thoughtful behaviour, not absolute refusal. It’s been shown to follow well-crafted persistent prompts. Don’t paste secrets and assume Claude won’t include them in an output.
- App Store cancellation works only from the platform you subscribed on — iOS subscriptions cancel via iOS Settings → Subscriptions, not via claude.ai.
