Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini — Which AI Assistant Should You Use?

The short answer

If you want one recommendation: try Claude first. Its writing quality and reasoning consistency tend to be the best of the three for general-purpose use. If Claude doesn’t fit, ChatGPT is the most versatile and has the largest feature set (image generation, video generation, broad plugins). Gemini wins if you live in Google Workspace or need huge documents.

But none of these are objectively “best.” The differences matter. This guide helps you choose based on what you actually do.

The honest framing

All three are excellent. Any of them will do 95% of what you need an AI assistant for. The differences are:

  • Around the edges (features, specialisations)
  • In writing voice and personality
  • In integration with other tools you use
  • In pricing and free tiers

You should consider trying all three free tiers for a week and seeing which feels right.

When to choose Claude

Strong fit if you primarily:

  • Write a lot — emails, essays, reports, documents
  • Work with long documents (briefs, contracts, research papers)
  • Want thoughtful, careful reasoning (Claude’s “extended thinking” mode is excellent)
  • Prefer responses that feel considered rather than chatty
  • Value the strongest published privacy commitments
  • Use Anthropic’s developer tools (Claude API, Claude Code)
  • Have a strong feeling about “AI safety” being important

Less strong fit if you primarily:

  • Want image or video generation built-in
  • Need real-time web search with live data
  • Want extensive plugins/integrations
  • Need the biggest possible context window

Why people switch TO Claude: ChatGPT can feel formulaic or chatty; Claude’s responses often feel more like a thoughtful colleague.

Why people switch FROM Claude: Need DALL·E for images, want a specific Custom GPT, want broader plugin ecosystem.

When to choose ChatGPT

Strong fit if you primarily:

  • Want the most versatile single tool (text + images + video + voice + browsing)
  • Use lots of Custom GPTs or want to build your own
  • Need real-time web search frequently
  • Want Sora (video generation)
  • Need DALL·E image generation built in
  • Use voice mode extensively (Advanced Voice is excellent)
  • Want broad plugin ecosystem
  • Need Deep Research as your primary research tool

Less strong fit if you primarily:

  • Want pure writing quality (Claude often edges it)
  • Want the largest context window (Gemini wins)
  • Live in Google Workspace (Gemini integrates better)

Why people switch TO ChatGPT: No other tool has the same breadth — DALL·E + Sora + voice + GPTs + reasoning all in one.

Why people switch FROM ChatGPT: Wanting more thoughtful writing (→ Claude) or better Workspace integration (→ Gemini).

When to choose Gemini

Strong fit if you primarily:

  • Use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, Calendar daily
  • Want AI inside your existing Google tools
  • Work with very long documents (1M token context is unmatched)
  • Value real-time information (live Google Search integration)
  • Want NotebookLM access (Google’s research and document analysis tool)
  • Want generous free tier
  • Already pay for Google One (cloud storage); upgrade to AI Premium adds AI for slight extra cost

Less strong fit if you primarily:

  • Live outside the Google ecosystem
  • Want the strongest writing voice (Claude)
  • Want the largest feature breadth (ChatGPT)

Why people switch TO Gemini: Already pay for Google storage; the AI Premium upgrade is small. Or: need 1M token context.

Why people switch FROM Gemini: Writing voice can feel a bit corporate/cautious; want specific features other tools have.

A decision tree (no really, you can just follow this)

Question 1: Do you write substantially — emails, reports, essays, documents?

  • Yes → Strong consideration for Claude
  • No → Continue to Question 2

Question 2: Do you want image generation, video generation, voice mode, or extensive plugins built in?

  • Yes → Strong consideration for ChatGPT
  • No → Continue to Question 3

Question 3: Do you live in Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive)?

  • Yes → Strong consideration for Gemini
  • No → Continue to Question 4

Question 4: Do you want the most generous free tier?

  • Yes → Try Gemini free first
  • No → Try Claude or ChatGPT based on which website/style appeals more

What about “just use all three”?

This is actually reasonable. Many AI power users keep all three accounts (free tiers) and choose based on task:

  • Claude for writing tasks and long documents
  • ChatGPT for image generation, voice conversation, and broad capability
  • Gemini for current information, Workspace tasks, and 1M context needs

Total cost: 80–90 USD/month if you pay for all three (rarely necessary).

What about the others?

Beyond the big three, worth knowing:

  • Microsoft Copilot: Essentially ChatGPT (GPT-4o under the hood) packaged for Microsoft users. Free with a Microsoft account. Excellent if you live in Office/Windows.
  • Perplexity: AI-powered search engine. Different category — designed for research, not general assistance.
  • Mistral Le Chat: French/European alternative. Good for European data sovereignty needs.
  • Grok: Available with X Premium. Good for X/Twitter integration; political and ownership concerns make this less of a default recommendation.
  • Meta AI: Free in WhatsApp/Instagram/Facebook. Convenient but data goes to Meta.
  • DuckDuckGo AI Chat: Free, private, no account needed. Routes to Claude, GPT-4o Mini, Llama. Great for occasional use.

For most Australians, the main three (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) are the right consideration set.

Practical recommendation by user type

Students

  • Start with: Gemini (generous free tier; NotebookLM for study)
  • Add if needed: ChatGPT (image generation; broader capabilities)

Writers, journalists, marketers, content creators

  • Start with: Claude (best writing voice)
  • Add if needed: ChatGPT (for images, broader research)

Software developers

  • Start with: Claude (Claude Code is exceptional)
  • Add if needed: Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus for the AI assistant

Business professionals

  • Start with: Whatever your office uses (M365 → Copilot; Workspace → Gemini)
  • Add for personal use: Claude Pro (writing quality)

Researchers, academics

  • Start with: Gemini Advanced (Deep Research, NotebookLM, large context)
  • Add if needed: Claude for writing up

Designers, visual creators

  • Start with: ChatGPT (image generation built in)
  • Add if needed: Claude (for written components of design work)

Small business owners

  • Start with: Claude (writing — emails, proposals, contracts)
  • Add if needed: ChatGPT (for marketing images, broader research)

Older users / people who want simple

  • Start with: Whichever your phone supports best
    • iPhone: ChatGPT or Claude work well
    • Android (Pixel): Gemini is native and excellent

A note on Chinese alternatives

The encyclopedia recommends against DeepSeek, Qwen, Doubao, Kimi, and other Chinese AI tools. They’re often very capable but raise serious data sovereignty, privacy, and political concerns specific to Australian users. See vendors-chinese-avoid for the full reasoning.

For any task where you’d consider a Chinese AI, one of Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini does the same task without those concerns.

How the comparison changes over time

The three main labs are in fierce competition. The “best” model can change every few months:

  • A new Claude release may temporarily lead on reasoning
  • A new GPT model may temporarily lead on multimodal
  • A new Gemini may temporarily lead on context length

For most users, these short-term changes don’t matter much. Pick one that fits your workflow and stick with it unless the differences become persistent and significant.

Check pricing-snapshot and capability-matrix for current state.
