What you’re doing

This guide walks you through creating a Claude account from Australia. Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant — generally considered one of the best for thoughtful writing, careful reasoning, and longer documents. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.

What you need

  • An email address
  • A web browser OR mobile phone (iOS or Android)
  • (Optional) A credit card or PayPal — only if upgrading to Pro

You do not need a VPN, US phone number, or US payment method. Claude works in Australia without any of these.

Step-by-step

Step 1 — Go to claude.ai

Open https://claude.ai in your browser.

Step 2 — Click “Sign up”

You’ll see options to continue with Google or with an email address.

Recommendation: “Continue with Google” is fastest. If you prefer email, that works too.

Step 3 — Verify your email (if using email)

Open your email, click the verification link Anthropic sent you, and return to claude.ai.

Step 4 — Add a phone number for verification

Anthropic asks for an Australian mobile number for verification. This is to prevent automated abuse, similar to other AI providers.

  • Select +61 Australia
  • Enter your mobile number (no leading 0)
  • Enter the 6-digit code you receive via SMS

Step 5 — Accept the terms and you’re in

You’ll land on the Claude interface — a simple message box and history sidebar.

Your first useful conversation

Claude shines on tasks that benefit from thoughtful, nuanced responses. Try:

  • “Help me draft a difficult email to a colleague about a workload issue. The tone should be professional but firm.”
  • “Review my essay below and give specific suggestions for improving clarity and flow: [paste essay]”
  • “Explain the differences between the Australian Privacy Act and the EU GDPR, in plain English.”
  • “I’m trying to decide between buying a hybrid and an electric car for Sydney suburbs. What questions should I be asking?”
  • “Read this contract section and explain it to me in plain English, then list any concerning clauses: [paste contract]”

Claude will respond — and will often write longer, more nuanced responses than ChatGPT does by default. Many people find Claude’s writing style more thoughtful and less generic.

Should you upgrade to Claude Pro?

Pro costs ~31 AUD) and includes:

Worth paying for if you:

  • Use Claude regularly for writing, analysis, or research
  • Want the most capable models (Claude Opus, extended thinking)
  • Want Projects (long-running conversations with persistent knowledge)
  • Hit message limits on free
  • Want priority access during peak times
  • Upload documents frequently (PDFs, spreadsheets) for analysis

Free is enough if you:

  • Use Claude occasionally for quick questions
  • Are comparing AI tools and using multiple

To upgrade: click your name (bottom left) → Upgrade → choose plan.

There’s also Claude Max ($100 USD/month) for very heavy users — 5× the usage of Pro, priority access to new features.

Setting up the mobile app

  1. iPhone: App Store → search “Claude by Anthropic” → install
  2. Android: Google Play → search “Claude by Anthropic” → install
  3. Sign in with the same account
  4. Your conversation history syncs across devices

The Claude mobile app has voice input (talk instead of type) and works well as an alternative to the web version.

Click your name → Settings:

Appearance

Switch between light and dark mode (Auto follows your system).

Custom instructions / “What would you like Claude to know about you?”

Set background information that applies to every conversation:

  • “I’m an Australian based in [city]”
  • “I prefer concise responses with bullet points where useful”
  • “I’m not a coder; explain technical concepts in plain English”
  • “When relevant, use Australian context (dates, spelling, services)”

This saves you typing this information every conversation.

Privacy and Data

Review what’s saved and how. By default, Anthropic does not use your conversations to train its models (this is a significant difference from some other AI providers).

What makes Claude different from ChatGPT

After using both, you may notice:

Claude tends to be better at:

  • Long-form writing with consistent voice
  • Following complex multi-part instructions precisely
  • Handling long documents (200K token context — that’s about a 500-page novel)
  • Explaining its reasoning step by step
  • Being thoughtful rather than chatty

ChatGPT tends to be better at:

  • Image generation (DALL·E built in; Claude doesn’t generate images)
  • Voice mode (Claude’s voice mode is newer/less developed)
  • Web search and real-time information
  • Sora (video generation)
  • Custom GPTs ecosystem

Both are excellent; many people use both. Some workflows favour one; others favour the other.

Australian-specific tips

  • Pricing: Tell Claude “use AUD” in your custom instructions to default to Australian dollars
  • Spelling: Tell Claude to “use Australian English spelling” — it defaults to US English
  • Knowledge cutoff: Claude’s training data has a cutoff date (varies by model). Current Australian information (politics, recent events, current pricing) should be verified independently
  • Australia-specific context: Claude is generally well-versed in Australian context but for specifics (current ATO rates, Centrelink policies, state laws) always verify with primary sources

Privacy considerations

What you type goes to Anthropic’s US servers. Anthropic has stronger published commitments than some competitors:

  • Conversations are not used to train Claude by default
  • Strong content policies prevent misuse
  • Enterprise data handling for business users with appropriate agreements

For business use involving customer data, consider Claude Team or Claude Enterprise (which include DPAs addressing Australian Privacy Act obligations).

Don’t share:

  • Passwords or credentials
  • Australian Tax File Numbers, Medicare numbers, full credit card numbers
  • Confidential client data without appropriate enterprise plan
  • Highly sensitive personal/medical information
