What you’re doing
This guide walks you through accessing Google Gemini from Australia. If you already have a Google account (Gmail, Workspace, Android phone), you might already have access — you just don’t know where to click.
What you need
- A Google account (free if you don’t have one — sign up at accounts.google.com)
- A web browser OR mobile phone (iOS or Android)
- (Optional) A payment method — only if upgrading to Gemini Advanced
You do not need a VPN, US phone, or US credit card. Gemini works in Australia.
Step-by-step
Step 1 — Go to gemini.google.com
Open https://gemini.google.com in your browser.
Step 2 — Sign in with Google
Click Sign in at the top right and use any Google account:
- Personal Gmail (e.g., yourname@gmail.com)
- Google Workspace account (work or school email through Google)
If you’re already signed in to Google in your browser, you may be signed in to Gemini automatically.
Step 3 — Accept terms
First-time users see Google’s Gemini terms. Read them (briefly!) and click Accept.
Step 4 — You’re in
You’ll land on Gemini’s interface — a clean message box. Start typing.
Your first useful conversation
Gemini excels at tasks that benefit from Google’s ecosystem and current information. Try:
- “What are the must-see exhibits at the NGV right now?”
- “Help me plan a 3-day trip to Tasmania for someone who loves nature and food.”
- “Compare the latest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy — give me 5 key differences for everyday users.”
- “What’s a good 30-minute weeknight dinner using salmon, broccoli, and rice?”
- “Help me prepare for a job interview for a junior marketing role.”
Gemini connects to real-time Google Search — so for current information (current events, recent product releases, today’s weather), it has fresher data than other AI assistants.
Should you upgrade to Gemini Advanced?
Gemini Advanced is part of Google One AI Premium (~$32.99 AUD/month). It includes:
- Gemini 2.5 Pro: Google’s most capable model with up to 1 million tokens context (the largest of any consumer AI)
- Deep Research: Multi-step AI research that synthesises information from many sources
- Gemini in Workspace: AI inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet
- Gems: Custom AI assistants (like ChatGPT’s Custom GPTs)
- 2 TB Google One storage: Significant cloud storage included
- NotebookLM Plus: More usage of NotebookLM (research and document analysis)
Worth it if you:
- Already use Google Workspace heavily (Gmail, Docs, Drive)
- Want AI in your Gmail/Docs without separately paying
- Want Deep Research mode (extensive cited research reports)
- Use NotebookLM regularly
- Want the largest context window for documents
- Want 2 TB of cloud storage anyway
Stay free if you:
- Use Gemini occasionally
- Don’t live in the Google ecosystem
- Already pay for ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro
Getting Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Sheets (free vs paid)
This is where it gets a bit confusing. Gemini integration with Google Workspace apps:
- Free Google accounts: Some Gemini features in apps; varies by region. Australia has access to many features.
- Google One AI Premium: Full Gemini integration across all Workspace apps.
- Google Workspace business/enterprise: Depends on plan — Gemini Business and Gemini Enterprise are separate addons.
To check if your Gmail/Docs/etc. has Gemini features:
- Gmail: Open an email; look for the Help me write button or Gemini icon (pencil with sparkle)
- Docs: Tools menu → Help me write or the Gemini sidebar icon
- Sheets: Tools menu → Help me organize or Gemini features
If you don’t see these, your account may not have AI features enabled or your region/plan doesn’t include them.
Setting up the mobile app
iPhone
- App Store → search “Google Gemini” → install
- Sign in with your Google account
Android
- The Gemini app may already be installed (it replaces the older Google Assistant on many devices)
- Google Play → search “Gemini” → install or open
- You may be prompted to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini
The mobile app has voice input — tap the microphone to talk.
Recommended early settings
In Gemini settings (click your profile picture top right):
Gemini Apps Activity
Controls whether your Gemini conversations are saved and used to improve Google’s services. You can:
- Turn it off entirely
- Set auto-delete (3, 18, or 36 months)
- Manage individual conversations
Recommendation: Most users keep activity on but with auto-delete after 18 months as a balance.
Extensions (now called Gemini Apps)
Gemini can connect to:
- Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Docs)
- Google Maps
- YouTube
- Google Flights and Hotels
- And more
Enable the ones you’d find useful. With Gmail extension enabled, you can ask: “Find that email from last week about the gym membership.”
What makes Gemini different
After using ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, you’ll notice:
Gemini tends to be better at:
- Current information (live Google Search integration)
- Google Workspace integration (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides)
- Long documents (1M token context — by far the largest)
- Visual tasks (image understanding, charts, diagrams)
- Real-time voice with Gemini Live
- Pricing for general users (Google One AI Premium often bundled with storage)
ChatGPT/Claude tend to be better at:
- Conversational nuance and tone
- Long-form creative writing (Claude especially)
- Custom GPTs ecosystem (ChatGPT)
- Brand-name recognition
The reasonable approach: Try all three. The differences are real but personal preferences dominate. Many people end up using whichever has the best app on their device or fits their workflow.
Australian-specific tips
- Australian search results: Gemini’s web search returns Australian-relevant results when you’re in Australia. Useful for “Best dentists near me” type queries.
- Australian spelling and dates: Generally good. If you want to be sure, ask Gemini to use Australian English.
- Local services: Gemini knows about Australian institutions (Medicare, Centrelink, RACV/RACQ/etc., major banks). For specific current details, verify.
- AEDT/AEST timezone: Gemini understands Australian timezones natively.
- Time-sensitive info: Because Gemini has live Google Search, it can give you reasonably current information (within hours/days). Still verify for critical decisions.
Privacy considerations
Gemini sends your queries to Google’s servers. Google’s data handling is well-documented but extensive:
- Conversations may be saved in Gemini Apps Activity (controllable)
- May be reviewed by humans for service improvement (a portion sampled)
- Personal Google account: not used for ad targeting from Gemini conversations
- Workspace business accounts have stronger contractual protections
For sensitive information, don’t share what you wouldn’t share with Google generally. Don’t share:
- Passwords, credentials
- Personal banking details
- Confidential client information (without enterprise plan)
- Sensitive medical information
For sensitive content, you can also enable temporary chat mode (where conversations aren’t saved).
