What it is
Microsoft 365 Copilot is the work / enterprise version of Microsoft Copilot — distinct from the consumer Copilot covered in the Microsoft Copilot entry. M365 Copilot is integrated directly inside:
- Word — write / rewrite / summarise documents
- Excel — analyse data, generate formulas, build pivot tables
- PowerPoint — generate slides from prompts or Word docs
- Outlook — summarise email threads, draft replies
- Teams — meeting summaries, action items, chat-context AI
- OneNote — note organisation and summarisation
- OneDrive — file Q&A
- Loop — collaborative AI work
- Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat (the chat surface) — answers questions using your organisation’s data
- Copilot Pages — AI-collaborated documents
The defining feature: Copilot uses YOUR organisation’s data (your emails, your team’s documents, your calendar, your SharePoint, your Teams chats — within permissions) as context for every response. Ask “what’s the status of project X” and Copilot can pull from emails, docs, meetings, and project files to give a real answer.
Critical privacy commitment: Microsoft 365 Copilot does NOT train on your data. This is contractually committed in the M365 Copilot terms. Your tenant’s data stays in your tenant; Copilot’s responses use your data only at the time of the request, never to update the underlying models.
What you’d use it for

How to get it from Australia
- Have an underlying M365 subscription — Microsoft 365 Business Basic / Standard / Premium, or Microsoft 365 E3 / E5 (Enterprise)
- Add the M365 Copilot license — purchase via Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Billing → Add-ons
- US$30/user/month, billed in AUD via Microsoft AUS billing
- Annual commit required (no month-to-month for M365 Copilot specifically)
- Once licensed, Copilot icons appear in Word / Excel / Outlook / Teams / etc.
- For trial: Microsoft offers free trial periods for new customers; check current Microsoft 365 promotions
What it costs
M365 Copilot — US$30/user/month (annual)
- Requires existing M365 Business / Enterprise subscription
- Total cost: M365 subscription (US30/user/mo) = US$40-52/user/mo
- AUD billing native via Microsoft AUS — ATO-recognised tax invoice
- Annual commit (no monthly billing for Copilot specifically)
M365 Copilot Chat (free with work accounts)
- A free Copilot Chat surface for M365 work accounts
- Does NOT include Word / Excel / PowerPoint deep integration
- Uses publicly-available data, not tenant data
- Good for evaluation before committing to full Copilot
Hidden costs to know about
- Per-seat licensing model — can’t license selectively for specific Copilot features
- M365 Copilot requires the underlying M365 license; total cost is meaningful
- For very small businesses, consider whether per-seat cost justifies usage

Gotchas
- Don’t confuse with consumer Copilot. Microsoft 365 Copilot (work) ≠ Microsoft Copilot (consumer) ≠ Copilot Pro (personal Office) ≠ Copilot in Edge / Windows. All called “Copilot”; very different products.
- Requires underlying M365 subscription — can’t buy M365 Copilot standalone. Total cost is M365 + Copilot.
- Annual commit only — no monthly billing for Copilot specifically
- Copilot’s data access respects M365 permissions — but if your org’s permissions are loose (shared with whole company), Copilot can surface things people didn’t realise was findable. Worth a permissions audit before rollout.
- Excel Copilot quality is uneven — generates good summaries / pivots but advanced formula generation can have bugs; verify
- PowerPoint slide generation is fine for first drafts but rarely production-ready
- Outlook summarisation is excellent for long threads but can miss nuance
- Teams meeting recap requires recording / transcript permissions — your IT department configures
- Per-seat cost adds up — for a 50-person org, M365 Copilot is US$18,000/year just for Copilot
- Initial value depends on adoption — orgs that train users see much better value than orgs that just buy licenses
- For DIY power users, Copilot Pro (US$20/mo personal) gives Office Copilot features at home if you also have M365 Personal/Family
