What it is

Claude in Chrome is Anthropic’s official Chrome extension. Once installed, Claude appears as a sidebar in any Chrome tab. Inside the sidebar, you can:

  • Chat with Claude about the current page — “summarise this article,” “what’s the gist of this?”
  • Have Claude take browser actions — “click the apply button,” “fill in this form using my contact info”
  • Multi-step browser tasks — “research the cheapest flights to Sydney next week and copy the top 3 into a spreadsheet”
  • Cross-tab work — work spanning multiple tabs / pages
  • Inline tab assistance — Claude can read the active tab’s content for context

Claude in Chrome is the browser-specific implementation of Anthropic’s broader Computer Use technology. Computer Use can drive any desktop app; Claude in Chrome is purpose-built for the browser, which makes it more reliable and easier to use for web-only workflows.

This is distinct from:

  • Chrome’s built-in Gemini integration (Google’s competing browser AI)
  • Brave Leo (Brave browser’s competing AI)
  • Edge Copilot (Microsoft’s browser AI)
  • Arc / Dia / Comet (AI-first browsers)

Claude in Chrome is just an extension layered on standard Chrome — you keep using Chrome as your browser, with Claude added.

What you’d use it for

  • Quickly summarising long articles without copying them out
  • Filling forms repeatedly with consistent data
  • Browsing-and-acting tasks — research a topic and deposit results in a doc
  • Comparison shopping — Claude reads several product pages and compares
  • Filling out lengthy applications with stored information
  • Researching a complex topic across multiple tabs
  • Automating routine browser admin — clicking through workflows in tools that lack APIs
  • Privacy-respecting AI in the browser without changing your default browser (alternative to switching to Brave / Arc)

How to install + first 5 minutes from Australia

  1. Open Chrome (works in any Chromium-based browser: Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Dia — but officially supported on Chrome).
  2. Go to the Chrome Web Store and search for “Claude” — install the official Anthropic extension. Verify it’s published by Anthropic.
  3. Pin the extension icon for easy access.
  4. Click the Claude icon. Sign in with your Claude account (the same one you use at claude.ai).
  5. Free tier active; some agent features may be Pro-only.
  6. Try one of these:
    • Open any long article. Click Claude → “Summarise this page.”
    • Open a multi-step form. Click Claude → “Help me fill this in using my standard contact info.” Provide info once; Claude completes the form.
    • Multi-tab research: “Compare the three open tabs and tell me which deal is best.”
  7. For agent actions (clicks, form-fills, automation): Claude asks for confirmation before performing actions for the first time; you can configure permissions per-site.

What it costs — what you actually get

  • Faster Sonnet / Opus access in the browser

Hidden costs

For complex multi-step browser tasks, Claude in Chrome is arguably the most capable browser-AI as of mid-2026. For simple page summarisation, all of the alternatives work well. For maximum privacy with no account, Brave Leo and DuckDuckGo AI Chat are stronger.

Privacy / data handling

  • Page content is sent to Anthropic when Claude reads or acts on a page
  • Training defaults apply (consumer Claude.ai: training-by-default since Sep 2025; opt-out available at claude.ai → Settings → Privacy)
  • Browser actions (clicks, form-fills) are decided by Claude based on the page content + your instructions
  • For sensitive pages (banking, medical records, work intranets with confidential data): close Claude in Chrome before viewing, or use Claude.ai Team / Enterprise tier (which doesn’t train and has stricter handling)
  • Permission per-site — you can disallow Claude in Chrome on specific domains

Recent changes

  • 2026: Cross-tab orchestration improved; multi-step agent actions matured
  • 2025: Initial release; rapid feature expansion through 2025

Gotchas

  • It’s a CHROME extension — works in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Dia (any Chromium-based browser). Does NOT work in Safari or Firefox as of mid-2026.
  • Permissions are real — installing the extension grants it access to read pages. Review what you’re granting before installing.
  • Banking / medical / work-confidential pages — Claude in Chrome sees what you see. Disable on sensitive domains.
  • Agent actions can go wrong — multi-step automation occasionally clicks the wrong thing. Watch what it does before stepping away.
  • Free tier limits hit faster than Claude.ai chat — heavy browser agent use will push you to Pro
  • Browser updates can occasionally break extension functionality — keep both Chrome and the extension updated
  • For developers, Claude in Chrome doesn’t replace Claude Code or Cursor — it’s a different surface (browser, not code editor)
  • Multi-tab orchestration is powerful but consumes context fast — for very large research tasks, claude.ai with projects may be cheaper
