What it is
DuckDuckGo AI Chat is a privacy-respecting front-end to several major AI chat models. You go to duck.ai (or click the “Chat” tab on duckduckgo.com), pick a model, and talk to it — without:
- Creating an account
- Entering payment details
- Having your chats stored by anyone
- Having your IP exposed to the underlying model provider
DuckDuckGo acts as a privacy router: your request goes to DuckDuckGo’s servers, DuckDuckGo strips identifying information, then forwards an anonymised request to the chosen model provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral). The response comes back through DuckDuckGo to you.
The available models rotate based on DuckDuckGo’s agreements but typically include:
- GPT-4o mini / GPT-5 mini (OpenAI)
- Claude Haiku 4.5 / Claude Sonnet (Anthropic)
- Llama 3.3 / Llama 4 70B (Meta, hosted on Western infrastructure)
- Mistral models (Mistral)
- o3-mini or similar reasoning model (when offered)
The catch: you get smaller / faster variants of the frontier models rather than the top-tier flagships. Sonnet, not Opus. GPT-5 mini, not full GPT-5 Pro. This is the tradeoff for free + privacy-routed access.

Privacy / data handling deep dive
This is DuckDuckGo’s strongest selling point:
- No account, no email, no payment — DuckDuckGo doesn’t know who you are
- No chat history stored on DuckDuckGo servers — chats disappear when you close the tab
- IP address anonymised before forwarding to model providers
- DuckDuckGo has contractual agreements with model providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral) that the providers will not train on requests routed through DuckDuckGo and will not retain them for more than 30 days for abuse-monitoring
- DuckDuckGo’s own privacy commitment — they don’t store, log, or use your queries for advertising
Caveats:
- DuckDuckGo can see the content of your queries before anonymisation (they have to process it)
- The model providers see the anonymised query — content is visible, just not tied to you
- For TRULY sensitive content, on-device AI (Apple Intelligence on Apple Silicon, Ollama with local Llama, etc.) is stronger
- DuckDuckGo is a US company, so US legal process can theoretically reach them, though there’s not much to demand given the no-storage design
For everyday “I don’t want this in my permanent ChatGPT history” use cases, DuckDuckGo AI Chat is excellent.

Gotchas
- Smaller / faster variants only. Don’t expect frontier flagship-level quality.
- No persistence. Close the tab, lose the conversation. By design.
- No file uploads, no image gen, no voice. Pure text chat.
- Model availability rotates. Specific models may change as DuckDuckGo’s agreements with providers evolve.
- Not a substitute for a primary AI tool. Use for one-off questions; use Claude / ChatGPT / Gemini for serious work.
- The “Chat” tab on duckduckgo.com sometimes hides behind a settings toggle if not enabled — go to duck.ai directly to bypass.
