What it is
Pi was a consumer AI chatbot launched in May 2023 by Inflection AI, distinguished by:
- Focus on empathetic conversation rather than productivity / utility
- Strong voice mode (one of the first natural-sounding AI voices)
- Friendly, emotionally-intelligent tone vs ChatGPT’s task-oriented tone
- Free + ad-free
Inflection AI was founded 2022 by:
- Mustafa Suleyman — DeepMind co-founder (he co-founded DeepMind in London 2010 before its Google acquisition)
- Reid Hoffman — LinkedIn co-founder
- Karén Simonyan — DeepMind researcher
The company raised over US$1.5B at multi-billion valuation and built its own “Inflection-2.5” model competitive with GPT-4 quality.
The 2024 Microsoft team-acquisition
In March 2024, in a transaction widely reported as a regulatory-friendly acquihire:
- Microsoft hired Mustafa Suleyman as CEO of the new Microsoft AI division
- Karén Simonyan joined as Chief Scientist
- Most of Inflection’s engineering team moved to Microsoft AI
- Microsoft paid Inflection ~US$650M in licensing fees (technically not an acquisition, avoiding antitrust)
- Inflection remained as a shell organisation pivoting to enterprise AI services
The Pi product remained live but with minimal active development since March 2024.
The real legacy: Mustafa Suleyman + his team → Microsoft MAI (see Microsoft MAI entry). Pi the product is mostly historical context now.
What you’d use it for
Honestly: as of mid-2026, probably not much. Pi is still online but:
- No active development
- Voice mode has been overtaken by ChatGPT Advanced Voice, Gemini Live
- Empathetic-conversation niche partially served by ChatGPT, Claude, dedicated mental-health AI (Replika, Wysa)
If you’re studying Pi for historical / educational purposes (how a 2023 consumer AI was positioned), it’s still accessible at pi.ai.
For actual emotional-support AI use today:
- Claude.ai — naturally thoughtful conversation
- ChatGPT Advanced Voice — most-natural voice
- Specialised mental-health AI: Wysa, Woebot, Replika (verify privacy carefully before use)
How to access from Australia
- Go to pi.ai or heypi.com
- Sign up free with phone number
- Chat or use voice mode
- AUS access works
What it costs
Free
- Pi was always free
- No paid tier
Inflection enterprise services
- For B2B (the pivot after Suleyman’s departure), quoted pricing
How it compares to alternatives
| Capability | Pi | Claude (Pro) | ChatGPT (Plus) | Replika / Wysa |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Empathetic tone | Original niche | Naturally thoughtful | Versatile | Specialised |
| Voice mode | Was excellent (now dated) | Rolling out | Best (Advanced Voice) | Limited |
| Active development | Dormant | Active | Active | Active |
| Cost | Free | US$20/mo | US$20/mo | Free / US$5-20/mo |
For genuinely useful emotional / conversational AI today, Pi has been overtaken. Mainly historical interest now.
Privacy / data handling
- Pi originally committed to no-training on conversations
- Post-Microsoft-hire status uncertain — verify current Inflection terms if using
- For sensitive emotional content, prefer enterprise-tier providers (Claude Team / Enterprise) or specialised mental-health AI with clear privacy commitments
Recent changes
- March 2024: Microsoft hires Suleyman + team; Inflection pivots to enterprise
- May 2023: Pi launched
- 2022: Inflection AI founded
Gotchas
- The story is the people, not the product — Suleyman’s move to Microsoft is the lasting impact
- Pi is still online but largely dormant — minimal development; don’t rely on it for active use
- For “AI that’s nice to talk to”, Claude is the encyclopedia’s current pick
- For mental health, AI is not a substitute for human support — use AUS resources: Lifeline 13 11 14, Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636, headspace
- Reid Hoffman stayed prominent (LinkedIn co-founder; investor in many AI startups)
