What it is
Spotify AI DJ is a feature inside the Spotify music app that creates a personalised, AI-generated radio experience — complete with a synthetic DJ voice that introduces songs, makes commentary about artists, and transitions between tracks based on your personal listening history and mood.
It’s not just a playlist shuffle. The AI DJ:
- Analyses your complete Spotify listening history to understand what you like
- Picks songs you’ll likely enjoy — including familiar favourites and new discoveries
- Has a synthetic host voice (currently named “X”) that introduces tracks, shares context about artists, and makes smooth transitions
- Can be directed: if you say “play something different” or tap the DJ button for a new vibe, it pivots to a different genre or mood
- Updates its selections in real time based on your reactions (skip = didn’t like that direction; let it play = keep going)
What you’d use it for
- Background music while working, exercising, or relaxing — without choosing playlists yourself
- Music discovery without “shuffle all liked songs” randomness
- A curated radio experience that adapts to your mood and history
- When you don’t know what to listen to but want something good
How to access + first 5 minutes from Australia
- Open the Spotify app (iOS or Android) — update to the latest version
- Go to Home tab
- Look for the “DJ” card near the top of your feed (may also be found in the Music feed or Search → Browse)
- Tap Play → the DJ will start speaking and playing music tailored to you
- Tap the DJ icon while music is playing to get a new vibe/direction
- Tap thumbs up / thumbs down or skip tracks to shape future recommendations
The DJ voice (currently named “X”) is a synthetic voice trained to sound natural and conversational — it’s not a real human.
What it costs
Spotify AI DJ is included in Spotify Premium (~$12.99 AUD/month). It’s available in limited form on Spotify Free but the Premium experience is significantly better (no ads interrupting the DJ flow; unlimited skips).
Spotify Premium also includes: offline playback, no ads, higher audio quality, full track skip control.

Spotify’s recommendation engine has long been considered the best in the industry. AI DJ is an extension of that core strength, adding a conversational wrapper.
Privacy / data handling
- Spotify is a Swedish company subject to EU GDPR (one of the world’s strongest privacy frameworks)
- AI DJ uses your personal listening history, saved songs, followed artists, and listening patterns
- The synthetic voice technology is powered via a partnership with OpenAI (confirmed 2023)
- Voice commentary is generated using OpenAI APIs — your data (listening history) may be processed to generate contextual commentary
- Spotify’s standard privacy policy covers this: https://spotify.com/privacy
- You can control personalised recommendations in Spotify settings → Privacy → Tailored Advertising / Recommendations
- Audio data (what you say to the DJ) is processed if you use voice commands (Spotify’s microphone access)
Australian note: Spotify operates under its Swedish/EU privacy policy globally. Australian users are covered by the Privacy Act 1988 through Spotify’s standard privacy practices, as they process personal data about Australian users.
How Spotify uses AI beyond the DJ
Spotify uses AI extensively across its platform:
- Discover Weekly / Release Radar: AI-curated playlists, updated weekly — still one of the best music discovery tools available
- Recommended songs: The row of grey songs at the bottom of any playlist
- Podcast summaries: AI-generated summaries of podcast episodes
- Smart shuffle: Intelligently mixes songs from your playlists with related tracks
- Lyrics: AI-powered real-time lyric display synced to playback
- AI playlist: Describe what you want (“upbeat 90s pop for a road trip”) and AI builds a playlist — newer feature (2024)
- Audiobook AI narration: AI-narrated audiobooks for lower-cost production
Gotchas
- DJ requires good listening history. If your account is new or you have varied tastes that confuse the algorithm, the DJ’s selections may feel off at first. It improves the more you use Spotify.
- You can’t request specific songs. The DJ chooses for you — you can redirect the vibe but not say “play this specific song next.” Use the standard app for specific playback.
- The voice can feel uncanny. Some users love the AI DJ voice; others find it jarring or artificial. It’s a matter of personal preference. You can tap to start playing without listening to the commentary.
- Not available in every market. Launched in English-speaking markets first; check your region. Australia has full access.
- Data usage: Streaming audio is data-intensive. On mobile data (not WiFi), Spotify uses significant data — especially at High or Very High quality settings.
- The DJ “vibes” are coarse-grained. You can redirect to “something different” but you can’t say “more jazz, less pop.” The controls are simple.
Recent changes (LIVING)
- Global launch (2023): Expanded from US/Canada test to global including Australia.
- AI Playlist (2024): Describe a playlist in words → Spotify builds it — a related but distinct feature from the DJ.
- Voice commands (2024 rollout): In some markets, you can speak to the DJ and it responds — “play something slower” or “more 80s.”
- Audiobook AI narration (2024): Separate AI feature for narrated audiobooks.
