What it is

Google DeepMind is Google / Alphabet’s unified AI research and product division. Formed in April 2023 by merging:

  • DeepMind — UK-founded AI research lab (London, 2010); acquired by Google January 2014 for ~US$500M-650M
  • Google Brain — Google’s internal AI research division (Mountain View, founded 2011)

The UK heritage

DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman. The London office remains DeepMind’s headquarters even after the Google merger.
