Runway is not just a text-to-video generator. It’s a full AI creative suite for video with many tools:

Gotchas
- Very expensive for volume work. Video generation is one of the most computationally expensive AI tasks. Even the Unlimited plan has fair use policies. Budget carefully.
- Generation time is significant. A 5-second clip at Gen-4 quality takes 1–5 minutes to generate. For 60 seconds of finished video, expect hours of generation time.
- Character consistency is hard. A character in clip A may look different in clip B even with the same prompt. “Act One” helps but requires video of an actor to apply.
- Watermarks on free tier. Free outputs have a Runway watermark.
- Australian latency: US servers; Australian users experience some additional delay in generation (servers are US-based).
- Prompt engineering matters significantly. Vague prompts yield generic results. Cinematic vocabulary (focal length, lighting style, camera movement) produces much better results.
- The credits system is confusing. Different operations cost different credit amounts. Check the credit cost before generating — some advanced features cost more credits per second.
