What it is

Tome is an AI-first presentation and narrative document tool. It sits somewhere between a traditional slide deck (PowerPoint/Slides) and a flowing web document — optimised for storytelling rather than just displaying bullet points.

Its distinctive approach:

  • Narrative flow: Content flows like a story, with large images, video, and text weaving together
  • AI generation: Describe your topic; AI generates a complete “tome” (their term for a presentation/document)
  • Web-native format: Tomes are shareable as web links; they adapt to screen size and look great on mobile
  • Multimedia-first: Images, videos, data embeds, and 3D objects integrate naturally
  • AI image generation: Built-in image generation (DALL·E integration) so you can create custom visuals without leaving the tool

Tome competes most directly with Gamma, but has a more visually distinctive, editorial / magazine style.

What you’d use it for

  • Startup pitch decks with a modern editorial aesthetic
  • Storytelling-heavy presentations (brand stories, case studies, investor narratives)
  • Portfolio presentations with lots of visual content
  • Research and discovery presentations where visual richness matters
  • Sales decks that need to feel premium and polished

Tome’s aesthetic is the most distinctive — it looks different from standard slide decks in a way that can feel premium. The downside is that some corporate contexts expect a more traditional format.

Privacy / data handling

  • AWS hosting
  • Standard consumer SaaS data handling
  • AI features powered by partnerships with OpenAI and DALL·E for image generation
  • Free workspaces subject to standard terms; Pro plan has stronger data protections
  • Review current DPA/terms at tome.app/legal if processing sensitive content

Gotchas

  • The visual style may feel too “editorial” for conservative corporate contexts. Some organisations or clients expect standard slide-deck formats (PowerPoint style). Tome’s format can feel unusual to traditional business audiences.
  • Export to .pptx is imperfect. Tome’s native format doesn’t translate perfectly to PowerPoint. Complex layouts lose formatting. Treat the .pptx export as a starting point, not a final product.
  • AI credits are limited on the free plan. You’ll burn through them quickly if using image generation and text generation together.
  • No offline mode. Tome is entirely web-based. No internet = can’t present.
  • Limited chart/data visualisation built-in. For data-heavy presentations, you’ll embed charts from other tools (Google Sheets, Flourish, etc.) rather than creating them natively.
  • Animations are minimal. Like Gamma, Tome isn’t the right choice if you need sophisticated slide transitions or build animations.

Recent changes (LIVING)

  • AI generation revamp (2023): Full AI generation of multi-page presentations — the core pivot from their original tool.
  • DALL·E image generation integration (2023): Generate custom images inside Tome.
  • Analytics (2024): Track who viewed your shared tome and for how long — useful for sales decks.
  • Team workspaces (2024): Collaboration features for teams.
