What it is
D-ID is an Israeli AI company that specialises in making still photos speak — a technology called “talking avatars” or “talking heads.” You provide a photo of a person (or an AI-generated portrait) and a script (or audio), and D-ID animates the face to appear to be speaking.
Key difference from HeyGen and Synthesia:
- HeyGen / Synthesia: 3D-rendered AI avatars or full video clones
- D-ID: Animating existing photographs — making a real photo “come to life” by adding realistic mouth movements, subtle head movements, and blinking
D-ID products:
- Creative Reality Studio: The main product — animate photos to speak; choose from stock faces or upload your own portrait photo
- Agents: AI avatar chatbots for customer interaction — the talking face speaks in real time in response to customer questions
- API: Enterprise integration for automating talking avatar video generation
What you can do:
- Upload a portrait photo + type text → D-ID makes the person in the photo appear to speak
- Upload a portrait + upload audio → face animates to match the audio
- Create talking avatar chatbots for websites and apps
- Translate and re-lip-sync existing videos (dub into other languages)
What you’d use it for
- Marketing: Animate a product photo or brand spokesperson image
- Education: Create talking character explainers from illustrated characters
- Corporate comms: Quickly create a “talking” version of a CEO photo for a company announcement
- Historical figures: Animate historical photographs for education (museum exhibits, educational content)
- Customer service chatbots: Add a face to your chatbot for more human-feeling interaction
- Personalised video messages: Send personalised “talking” avatar messages at scale

D-ID’s niche: the cheapest way to create talking avatar content, especially if you have portrait photos you want to animate.
Privacy / data handling
- Israeli company; GDPR compliant; SOC 2 Type II
- Data hosted on AWS
- Photos and scripts processed to generate videos; not used to train D-ID’s models on paid plans
- The Agents product (chatbot) processes user conversations in real-time
Ethical use requirements:
- D-ID requires consent for animating real people’s photos
- Using D-ID to create non-consensual content of real people violates their terms
- Content policy prohibits deceptive use, political manipulation, or adult content
Gotchas
- The photo quality is critical. A blurry, low-resolution, or poorly-lit portrait will produce poor results. Use a high-quality, front-facing portrait with good lighting.
- Extreme head angles don’t work. The photo should be relatively straight-on — extreme profile shots or very angled faces don’t animate well.
- AI-generated portraits work well. If you want a digital character without using a real person’s face, generate a portrait with Midjourney or DALL·E and use that — it animates cleanly.
- Longer scripts drift. For long videos (2+ minutes), the quality of the lip sync can deteriorate. Break long content into multiple shorter clips.
- The chatbot (Agents) product requires development integration. It’s not plug-and-play — it requires embedding in your website or app via API.
