What it is
Framer started as a design and prototyping tool (competing with Figma) but made a significant pivot around 2022 to become a website builder — one that sits in a unique middle ground between no-code page builders (like Squarespace or Webflow) and professional design tools.
What makes Framer different:
- Design + publish in one tool: Unlike Figma (design only, no publishing), Framer lets you design a website and publish it live from the same interface
- Design-tool DNA: Framer uses the same precise visual controls designers expect — frames, constraints, auto-layout, components — rather than the block-based editors of WordPress or Squarespace
- Production-quality output: Framer outputs real, fast-loading HTML/CSS — not a visual editor that generates slow bloated code
- AI website generation: Describe your website; Framer AI generates a complete multi-page design in seconds
Framer AI features:
- AI website generation: “Create a portfolio website for a Melbourne photographer” → complete multi-page site
- AI text generation: Generate or rewrite page copy, headlines, and descriptions
- AI image removal: Remove backgrounds from images automatically
- AI component suggestions: Suggest appropriate UI components for your content
- Localisation AI: Translate website text into multiple languages with one click
What you’d use it for
- Building a professional website or landing page with design-quality control
- Portfolio websites, agency sites, SaaS marketing pages, startup sites
- Prototyping website designs that can immediately be published as real sites
- Designers who want to move from Figma designs to live websites without needing a developer
How to sign up + first 5 minutes from Australia
- Go to https://framer.com → Start for free
- Sign up with Google or email
- Click New project → choose Start with AI for AI generation, or Template for manual start
- For AI generation: describe your site (“Portfolio for a graphic designer in Sydney, minimal black and white style”)
- Framer generates a multi-page site in ~15 seconds
- Edit in the visual canvas — click any element to change text, colour, layout
- When ready: click Publish → your site is live at a
.framer.websitesubdomain (free plan) or your custom domain (paid plan)
What it costs
| Plan | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Build and edit; publish with Framer branding |
| Mini | ~$5 USD/month | Custom domain; 1,000 page views/month |
| Basic | ~$15 USD/month | Custom domain; 150,000 page views/month |
| Pro | ~$25 USD/month | Unlimited page views; CMS; team features |
Note: pricing is per site, not per user on higher tiers — important if building multiple client sites.
How it compares to alternatives
| Tool | Best for |
|---|---|
| Framer | Design-quality websites; designer-friendly; AI generation |
| Webflow | More powerful CMS; better for complex database-driven sites |
| Squarespace | Consumer-friendly; less design control but more polish out-of-box |
| Wix | Maximum ease; AI website builder (Wix ADI) |
| WordPress | Maximum flexibility; most plugins; most complex |
| v0 + Vercel | Code-based; developer builds from AI components |
| Figma | Design only (no publishing) |
Framer sits between Webflow and Figma: more powerful than Squarespace/Wix, less complex than Webflow’s CMS, and unique in being a full design tool that also publishes.
Privacy / data handling
- Framer is a Dutch (EU) company → GDPR applies by default
- Content may be hosted on Framer’s CDN (Cloudflare-backed, global)
- AI features use third-party LLMs and image AI — content from your workspace is processed
- Framer’s privacy policy: framer.com/privacy
- For client sites: ensure any personal data collected (forms, analytics) has appropriate consent under the Australian Privacy Act 1988
Gotchas
- Not the tool if you need complex database-driven content. Framer’s CMS is basic — for a blog, portfolio, or simple content site it’s great; for an e-commerce site or complex web app, look at Webflow, Shopify, or a custom build.
- The design paradigm differs from traditional website builders. People used to Squarespace or Wix will find Framer’s design-tool interface initially confusing. Budget a learning curve.
- Free plan sites have Framer branding. The
.framer.websitedomain and “Made with Framer” badge require a paid plan to remove. - Performance depends on your content. Framer sites can be very fast, but adding lots of heavy images or complex animations can slow them down. Use the built-in performance panel to check.
- AI generation is a starting point, not a finished site. AI-generated sites look good initially but need significant content personalisation. Replace all placeholder text and images.
- Mobile responsiveness is generally good but needs checking. Always preview on mobile before publishing — complex desktop layouts can break on small screens.
- Australian hosting note: Framer’s CDN is global (Cloudflare), so Australian visitors get served from nearby edge nodes. Performance for Australian visitors is generally good.
