What it is

Photoshop’s AI features are the most-used Adobe Firefly application — bringing generative AI to the world’s dominant pro image-editing software. The killer features:

Generative Fill

  • Select an area; type a prompt; Photoshop generates content to fill the selection
  • “Replace the background with a beach at sunset”
  • “Add a coffee cup to the desk”
  • “Remove the person and fill in the wall”
  • Easily the most-used “real-world AI” feature for photographers / designers

Generative Expand

  • Extend the canvas; Photoshop generates plausible content for the new area
  • Useful for changing aspect ratios, recovering cropped content

Generative Remove (or “Remove Tool” enhanced)

  • Click on something; AI removes it and fills the background
  • Cleaner than the older Spot Healing Brush / Content-Aware Fill

Neural Filters

  • Pre-AI-era AI tools: Skin Smoothing, Style Transfer, Colorize, Super Zoom, JPEG Artifact Removal
  • Useful but largely overshadowed by generative tools

Distraction Removal

  • Newer AI feature for cleaning up backgrounds automatically

Background Removal

  • One-click subject extraction (improving year-on-year)

All powered by Adobe Firefly under the hood (see Firefly entry).

What you’d use it for

  • Real photo editing with AI assist — Photoshop’s strength
  • Removing tourists, distractions, unwanted objects from photos
  • Extending photos (panorama-style or aspect-ratio changes)
  • Generating background replacements
  • Adding plausible elements to mock-ups
  • Wedding / event photography clean-up
  • Real-estate photography — adding skies, removing clutter
  • Product photography — clean backgrounds, generated elements

When NOT to use:

  • For pure generation (no existing photo), Midjourney / Imagen / OpenAI Image more flexible
  • For non-pro users, Canva / Microsoft Designer simpler
  • For free use, GIMP + Stable Diffusion plugins or open alternatives

Privacy / data handling

  • Firefly-based AI features — see Adobe Firefly for full posture
  • Adobe does NOT train Firefly on Creative Cloud customer content by default
  • Generated images carry Content Credentials (C2PA) metadata
  • For Enterprise, indemnification for Firefly-generated content

Recent changes

  • 2026: Generative Fill quality jump via Firefly Image Model 4
  • 2025: Generative Remove formalised as distinct feature
  • 2024: Generative Fill matured; more credit-efficient
  • October 2023: Generative Fill generally available
  • May 2023: Generative Fill beta launch

Gotchas

  • Generative Credits limit is real for heavy users — track usage
  • Subscription model required for most AI features (Photoshop Web has some free)
  • AUD billing handled by Adobe Australia — ATO-recognised tax invoice
  • Annual vs monthly Creative Cloud — annual saves significantly
  • Photoshop Web is limited vs desktop — for serious work, use desktop
  • Generative Fill outputs vary — generate 3-5 variants and pick the best (each consumes credits)
  • For non-Adobe users, learning Photoshop just for AI features is overkill — Canva / Microsoft Designer / dedicated image-gen tools simpler
  • AI doesn’t replace Photoshop skill — pros use AI as one tool among many; Generative Fill saves time, doesn’t replace expertise
