What it is
Ideogram is an AI image generation tool with a specific, distinctive strength: it can accurately render readable text inside images. This is something that most image generators do very poorly — text in AI-generated images typically looks garbled, with incorrect letters, misspelled words, and strange typography.
Ideogram was founded by ex-Google Brain researchers who specifically tackled this problem. The result is a tool that can:
- Generate logos with correct, readable text
- Create posters, book covers, and social media graphics where the text is part of the design
- Produce images with quotes, signs, banners, and labels that actually say what you asked
- Generate high-quality images across all other style categories too (not just text images)
Ideogram v2 and v2 Turbo (2024–2025) significantly advanced the model’s:
- Text rendering accuracy (now one of the best of any model)
- Overall image quality and photorealism
- Style range
- Generation speed
What you’d use it for
- Logo mockups and concept logos with company names rendered correctly
- Poster and flyer design: The AI creates the full layout with correct text
- Book covers and album art that need typography
- Social media graphics with quotes or headlines
- Signage in scenes: “A coffee shop sign saying ‘The Bean Scene’ in vintage lettering, warm afternoon light”
- Any image requiring readable text as part of the composition
How to sign up + first 5 minutes from Australia
- Go to https://ideogram.ai → Sign up with Google or email
- Type a prompt: “A retro travel poster for Melbourne Australia, illustration style, text reading ‘MELBOURNE — The Garden City’ in vintage poster typography”
- Choose aspect ratio (portrait, landscape, square)
- Click Generate → four image variations in ~30–60 seconds
- The images will have the correct text rendered in them — try this and compare to other AI tools
- Free plan: 25 slow generations per day (~50 images)
What it costs
| Plan | Price | Credits/month |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 25 slow gen/day |
| Basic | ~$7 USD/month | 400 priority credits |
| Plus | ~$16 USD/month | 1,000 priority credits |
| Pro | ~$48 USD/month | 3,200 priority credits |
How it compares to alternatives for text-in-images
| Tool | Text accuracy | Overall quality |
|---|---|---|
| Ideogram v2 | Best overall | Excellent |
| DALL·E 3 | Good | Excellent |
| Midjourney v6 | Poor–fair | Outstanding aesthetic |
| Stable Diffusion (base) | Poor | Variable |
| Flux Dev/Pro | Improving | Excellent |
| Adobe Firefly | Good | Good |
For any image where readable text is important, Ideogram is the first tool to try. For artistic images without text requirements, Midjourney or Flux often produce more aesthetically striking results.
Privacy / data handling
- AWS hosting; Canadian headquarters
- PIPEDA (Canada’s federal privacy law) and GDPR compliant
- Public images (default on free plan) are visible to all users
- Private generations available on paid plans — free plan outputs are public by default
- Paid plan content not used for training per terms
Important note for free plan: Your generations are public on Ideogram — anyone browsing Ideogram can see what you created. Use paid plans for any sensitive or confidential design work.
Gotchas
- Free plan outputs are public. Every image you generate on the free plan is visible on Ideogram’s public explore feed. Don’t generate anything confidential, personal, or that you want to keep private on the free plan.
- Text length has limits. Ideogram handles short text (1–10 words) very well. Very long text passages in images are still challenging.
- Text accuracy isn’t 100%. Ideogram is the best, but still occasionally makes typos in very long text or unusual fonts. Always check the output carefully.
- Not an Illustrator replacement. Ideogram generates raster images (photos/illustrations), not editable vector logos. For a final brand logo that needs resizing, take the Ideogram concept and recreate it in Illustrator or Inkscape.
- Prompt structure matters for text. Wrap the text you want in quotes in your prompt:
A poster with the text "Hello World" in large red letters. This signals to the model that this is literal text, not a description.
